Pew study has major ramifications for TV news and politics
A Reuters
report over the weekend on a new Pew study is more bad news for broadcast news. According to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, the Internet is now on par with weekly news magazines and television talk shows for Presidential campaign news. While television remains the top source, its audience is shrinking, while those who site cable TV and the Internet are increasing. In addition to the Internet, younger people actually consider late night comedy shows, like Saturday Night Live, to be sources for campaign news. The Internet as a source grew by 13% over 2000, the largest gain of any medium.

Those who get their news from the Internet tended to be the most knowledgeable, while those who rely on comedy shows and late night broadcast television tended to be poorly informed, the survey found.

Americans are more likely to perceive the news media as biased than they were several years ago. In 1987, 62 percent said they thought campaign coverage was free from bias, but that figure fell to 39 percent.

Reports like these that continue to show growth of the Internet as a serious news source are getting more and more common, and one has to wonder when the so-called "mainstream" media will catch on. TV stations without a plan to dedicate resources to the Web are taking a fatal risk.
